How Can My School Counselor Help...

If you have concerns about your child's behavior or mental health that you would like to discuss, please email me at [email protected].  I will set up a time to talk to you and assist you in finding interventions and/or community resources.

Individual Counseling:
Individual counseling is available to all students.  Typical counseling issues in elementary school may include topics such as anxiety, divorce, grief, anger management, social skills and friendship.  Individual counseling in the school setting is intended to be brief.  Students are typically not seen by the counselor for more than five sessions.  Mrs. Edge practices Solution-Focused Brief Therapy which focuses on student strengths.  She assists students in forming developmentally appropriate plans to meet their own counseling goals.  If parents or teachers would like to refer a student to the school counselor please click here and complete the google form School Counselor Referral Form

Group Counseling:

Small group counseling is offered when multiple students present with a similar counseling issue.  Groups normally contain six or less students of similar ages.  Groups usually last 4-6 weeks and are scheduled in 25- 30 minute blocks. Typical group topics may include social skills, anger management, self-esteem, friendship, and mindfulness.

Classroom Guidance:

Mrs. Edge teaches Guidance lessons in every classroom once a month; some grade levels have chosen to do their classroom guidance as a grade level event each month.  Classroom guidance lessons last for 45 minutes and topics vary by grade level; the elementary school uses the Core Essentials program and lessons are built around the monthly "Big Idea".  All topics address the American School Counselor Association National Standards.

Consultation:

Mrs. Edge is available to consult with school staff, parents, and community agencies.  Sometimes it is necessary to refer families to community agencies if a child could benefit from more intensive counseling services.  Ms. Exum is happy to help your child find the resources that he or she needs to be successful.

 Coordination:

Mrs. Edge helps coordinates the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) team at Tyrrell Elementary School.  MTSS helps teachers develop classroom interventions for students who are struggling academically or behaviorally.  She also coordinates the 504 Program and is the AIG Referral Coordinator. Please contact with any questions or concerns.
